2009-01-30: Sheikh Faisal's Museum

Trip Report: Sheikh Faisal's Museum

From David Mundie: The "museum + grounds = ramble" formula worked out nicely. Over a hundred Kewenaichgeers showed up, and were very pleased with the new displays of armaments, ceramics, furniture, and fabrics. Many people asked about the car collection, but the cars are not on display currently – they are waiting to be moved into a building of their own that is still under construction.

Ramble 2009-01-30: Sheikh Faisal's Museum

I'm delighted to announce that this weekend's ramble will be to the Sheikh Faisal bin Qassim Al-Thani Museum. To accomodate the museum's schedule, the ramble will be on SATURDAY, not Friday.

We are limited to 50 visitors, so if you are interested please notify me via e-mail by noon on Wednesday.

Description: We will meet at the museum itself at 9:00 and tour the collection for perhaps 90 minutes, then take a stroll around the grounds and the farm, which I'm told are lovely.

There is information about the museum, including maps and directons, at the following two web sites:

Date: 2009-01-31

Time: 09:00. Expected return to Doha about 12:30.

Venue: The Sheikh Faisal bin Qassim Al-Thani Museum

What to expect: A pleasant park surrounding the museum, which houses a collection of more than 3,000 unique pieces, including manuscripts, archeological finds, carpets, antique furniture, and historic cars.

Meeting Place: The museum itself. The GPS coordinates are N 25° 21' 10" E 51° 15' 17". See the online maps (above).

Vehicles: Four-wheel drive is not necessary.

Requirements: The usual: snacks, sunscreen, hat. Bring binoculars if you'd like to watch the wildlife.

FAQ: I thought rambles were on Friday? -- There have recently been requests for rambles on Saturday, and since the museum is closed on Friday, I thought this would be a worthwhile change of routine.

Leader: David Mundie. I know it's a scary thought, but I myself am going to be the leader for this ramble. Please call me at 581-8261 if you have questions on the day of the ramble.
