February Ramble: Forts of Qatar

Our February Ramble is a fascinating tour of the forts of Qatar. During the tour we will visit several forts and an exhibition, including the possibility of visiting the recently re-opened ruins at Zubarah.

Please note that numbers will be limited due to the nature of one of the sites. We plan to meet in Doha and carpool to the first site from there. 4x4 cars are not a requirement for the trip.

Registration is required. Please sign up during our regular meeting on Wednesday, February 6th from 6:30 to 6:55.

This is a QNHG members only ramble. If you are unable to attend the meeting this month, please send an email to the trip coordinators from Wednesday 6th February.

If you wish to join the ramble, but you are not a member, you can register via an email to Rebecca and pay your membership dues on the day of the tour.

Trip Leaders Bios

Dr Ferhan Sakal is a Turkish German archaeologist who studied Prehistory and Ancient Near Eastern Studies at the Universities of Istanbul (Turkey) and Tubingen (Germany). He holds a PhD in Near Eastern Archaeology from the University of Tubingen. Before moving to Qatar he worked for several excavation projects in Turkey, Syria, Lebanon, Egypt and Germany and was field director of several excavation and survey projects. He has published several books, editions and articles on chronology, archaeological excavations and material studies. Since 2013 he has held the position of Head of Archaeological Operations at the Division of Cultural Heritage, Qatar Museums. 

What to Bring?

At the minimum, be equipped with the following items:

  • Closed shoes that allow walking in moderately rough terrain. (e.g. sneakers should be fine, safety shoes would be ideal)

  • Sun Hat

  • Easy to carry water bottle

  • Light snack

  • Binoculars
