November Ramble#1: Sand Driving Workshop

Note: Please note we are restricted to 10 vehicles on first come basis. No restriction on passengers.
Driving in the desert is a key part of enjoying the outdoors and exploring the nature and history of Qatar. Many of our rambles involve travelling to remote and off-road areas of Qatar.
This event, kindly hosted by experienced off-road driver and marshal Caleb Ruth, will provide practical advice and instruction on the basics of driving safely and responsibly in sand dunes and mixed terrain, including equipment, driving techniques and recovery.
Caleb, supported by John Conti, another experienced off-roader, will guide us through the theory and practice of driving in sand, minimizing environmental impact, and enjoying safe and responsible off-road excursions. All participants must agree to follow the instructions of the marshals at all times.
What to bring?
- 4WD vehicle – must have 4H & 4L settings
- Qatar driving license& auto registration (Istimara)
- Full tank of petrol. (Closest WOQOD is at Messaieed Industrial Area (GPS: 24°58'30.8"N 51°32'20.5"E, Google Maps)
- Spare tire, jack, fire extinguisher, shovel, & first aid kit
- Plenty of water (4L per person minimum) and some snacks
- Hat and sunscreen
- Binoculars, camera and bird book if you have them!
09:00am–Meet at Sealine Beach (details to be provided upon registration)
09:05am–Orientation, safety & environmentally responsible driving
10:00am –Practical driving under supervision of the marshals
13:00pm –Stop at Inland Sea for lunch, swimming & bird watching
15.00pm – Depart to Sealine
16.00pm – End of Workshop
Activities leaders biographies
Caleb Ruth is an American health informatics specialist. He has been driving in the middle eastern deserts for seven years and marshaling off-road events for four years. He has been to every corner of Qatar and points in-between, as well as off-roading in Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, and Oman. Caleb grew up in the countryside and has been an avid outdoorsman his entire life.
Robert Moorhead is an Australian engineer who has been in Qatar since 2012. Robert is the QNHG Ramble (Birding) Coordinator and is passionate about the environment and history, is a keen bird watcher, and enjoys running and cricket.
