Synopsis:
Political tensions and regional turmoil have revealed the delicate balance of power that sustains our everyday life. The talk commences by offering a fresh view at what the ‘current state of affairs’, to shed awareness on contemporary issues that are a direct result of our everyday life choices. The impact of climate change is ‘cruelly unequal’ and it is the majority of humanity (marginalised communities) who are forced to overcome the interconnected challenges of poverty, stunted education systems, and imported ‘development’ models (new equity) that reduce or eliminate local or generational knowledge. The question addressed is whether, Traditional Knowledge has the answer to address arising challenges. The talk will have 3 stages:
- Current state of global connectivity – impact
- Development decoupled from local vernacular and contextusalised knowledge under the prowess of global economy
- The everyday challenges for the Global South in search for solutions.
Speaker Bio
Dr. Samie, an architect specialising in vernacular traditions in architecture and a cultural-thinker, is passionate about the Global South and the role humanities play in empowering communities. Raised in London, graduate of SOAS (University of London) with privilege to work in many wonderful countries, including Afghanistan, Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey. Dr. Samie has a Master’s in Architecture & Environmental Design and a PhD in Sustainable Heritage from the University of Liverpool (UK).
