Synopsis of talk
A pioneering all-female sailing voyage eXXpeditionis currently under way, with the aims to study plastic pollution and micro plastics and tackle the devastating environmental and health impacts of single-use plastic and toxics in the world’s oceans.
Katrin Scholz-Barth joined award winning oceans advocate and skipper Emily Penn on the mission to set sail in Plymouth, UK in October 2019, and sailed on the challenging first leg of the Round-the-World 2019-2021 voyage from Plymouth, UK to the Azores.
In total, 300 women will sail on this voyage of over 38,000 nautical miles and 30 legs for two years around the world.
In this talk, Katrin will share her experience of how the crew of 14 women managed to master to sail an already notoriously challenging part of the sea through relentless stormy conditions and still managed to collect ocean samples.
You will learn about the international multidisciplinary group of scientists, artists, filmmakers, teachers, doctors, and sustainability experts, and hear their stories as they conduct and document much needed research on ocean plastics. You are invited on board the 73-foot sailing vessel and research lab S.V. Travel Edge and hear first-hand about the five oceanic gyres, which have been recorded as the densest ocean plastic accumulation zones on the planet.
This event is a fundraiser to continue to support the ongoing research.
