As a relative newcomer to Qatar but no stranger to arid environments, the speaker will explore her first impressions of Qatar’s nature from a geologist’s perspective. From a brief background on Qatar’s geological record, the talk will journey from the origins of the rocks to how the arid climate now shapes the landscape that we see. Sharing geological concepts and comparing examples of the geology of other deserts, we will deconstruct some of Qatar’s desert mysteries. The talk will also include a brief demonstration on identifying and understanding common rock types found in the country, with rock samples to view.
