Synopsis:
In this talk, Vicky Damalou from Hadiqaa will share how gardening can be made sustainable in Qatar’s arid climate. She will talk about smart ways to save water, improve soil, and manage pests naturally. Vicky will also highlight how community gardens, like the Education City MicroFarm, bring people together to learn, grow food, and protect nature. Finally, she will introduce the Giving Garden, a project where volunteers grow food to help others in need. This talk shows how gardening can build stronger communities, support the environment, and make a real difference.
To enrich the experience, we will reserve the last 20 minutes for a hands-on session where participants can engage in a practical gardening activity, such as plant repotting, compost application, or seed starting, depending on the needs of the garden at the time.
Please come in casual clothes and be prepared to get your hands dirty as we dive into these hands-on gardening activities!
Speaker Bio
Vicky Damalou decided to become an agronomist at the age of 12. After graduating from the Agricultural University of Athens, Greece, she worked extensively in gardening, agricultural production, and marketing across Europe. Since moving to Qatar in 2010, Vicky has gained deep knowledge of local gardening and agricultural practices by working in various roles, including production, marketing, and sales in agricultural businesses, garden centers, and greenhouse establishments. She has also contributed to the business development of landscaping and agricultural companies.
As the founder of Hadiqaa, Vicky combines her expertise and passion for sustainability to provide agricultural advice and lead hands-on workshops that inspire people to connect with nature, grow their own food, and adopt eco-friendly practices. Her dream is to help create a greener future for everyone.
