Ramble Summary
Since 2008, the mission of the Qur’anic Botanical Gardens is to “promote a complete understanding of the plants, botanic terms and conservation principles mentioned in the Holy Qur’an & Sunnah by applying scientific innovations, building appreciation of cultural traditions and by creating a garden that will provide unique opportunities for learning.”
The Qur’anic Botanical Gardens not only exhibits and conserves species of plants & trees mentioned in the Qur’an but also aims to nurture indigenous plants of Qatar by planting them in its nurseries located within the Conservation Centre.
With 1000’s of plants (trees, shrubs, and perennial herbs including desert plants, temperate climate plants, and tropical plants) and a seedbank, QBG’s Conservation Centre at Education City underpins the Living Collection of the Botanical Gardens. This ramble will include a tour of the facility led by QBG’s Horticulturalist Mohamed Hassona, following his lecture at QNHG last year. We hope to get a peek into the workings of the Conservation Centre and Nurseries which support the Qur’anic Botanical Gardens.

Is a Senior Horticulturist at the Qur’anic Botanic Garden, Qatar Foundation. With over 19 years of experience in sustainable agriculture and conservation, he has led numerous initiatives aimed at preserving native plant species, promoting food security, and advancing sustainable development within the MENA region. Mohamed’s work integrates traditional practices with modern conservation techniques, emphasizing the significance of heritage plants mentioned in the Qur’an and Hadith. His dedication to environmental stewardship has been instrumental in expanding Qatar’s plant conservation programs and educating the community on sustainable practices.
Trip Coordinator Bio
(Dr. Treena Bron)
Dr Treena Bron is a geologist (BScHon, PhD) with expertise in sedimentology, petroleum geology, planetary geology and environment. She has worked in research, industry and academia and done fieldwork worldwide from Africa to Canada, from Arctic to Outback. She is a passionate naturalist & environmental advocate.
